In your treatment you receive a comprehensive assessment, expert diagnosis, and treatment specific to your problem. They combine hands-on ‘manual therapy’ and specific exercise in their treatments. We aim to work very closely with each individual physio to provide the best possible Pilates exercises to aid each patient’s injury rehabilitation. We will follow on from the many exercises given to the patients by the physios and ensure they are both carried out and using the correct technique in the comfort of the patients own homes or even at work. We’re seeing a real increase in demand for not only home visit Pilates but also classes at work across London. Our feedback suggests that the rise of work classes is due to Pilates being something you don’t have to get too hot and sweaty to benefit from thus showers etc are not necessary afterwards. It is therefore, quick, easy and convenient and fits ideally into lunch hours. Further more and with Pilates as an exercise form in general, its really very effective and as long as you complete it correctly, results are noticeable after just a few sessions, thus motivating people to continue. Finally, Pilates is excellent as a rehabillitation tool and is successfully used to bridge the gap between physiotherapy and full recovery. For more information on Pilates visit our specialist pilates page above.

Pilates is a worldwide exercise technique that has been adopted by and helped millions of people. Pilates is a technique based on 8 principles which go way back to its founder Joseph.H.Pilates, follow these and results are close behind. They are: Concentration – this is clear to anyone who has participated in a well taught pilates lesson, for pilates to achieve its goal you must really focus on the execution of the movement. Breathing – Joseph Pilates stated that ‘breathing is the first act of life, and the last’, in pilates you must breath slowly and exhale on the challenging phase of the exercise (although this is sometimes hard to define!). Centering – exercising with your spine in a neutral position is crucial. Control – movements must always be controlled based on the ability to maintain this pelvic neutral position. Precision – specificity of training is vital in achieving the correct training of muscles. Flowing Movement – pilates works on trying to build an individual into working as a complete flowing movement. Integrated Isolation – relating to centering but incorporating it into normal daily activities. Finally; Routine – linked to the learning of moves going through three stages: cognitive, associative and then automatic.

The first problem is finding a suitable machine to buy. This is not as easy as I thought it would be when asked to buy one for a valued client. As usual, the specialist home based ones are much lower quality and poorer build than the studio machines. The difference in price is of course, massive. My research suggests that with these machines you do get what you pay for. In this clients case budget was no problem so we bought the best one priced at £3000 or so. This is not an option for most so a studio is a much better idea. It general it might be a good idea to begin pilates by doing the matt based version, this is much cheaper. There are hundreds of very challenging exercises that can be completed just using body weight. If you like this then the machines may be worth a go later on when you have improved core stability. Any good/bad experiences on pilates machines? let me know.

Now before I go further, I am not suggesting that every person with every type of MS would be helped but she most certainly has. Through strengthening her core via the various matt based pilates movements she has found her posture has improved greatly. It has also helped psychologically, ‘I never thought I’d be able to do that’ she said. Not all but most of the exercises to intermediate level are possible and are regularly completed. Even quite far down the line many of the various exercises are able to adapted so that some form of pilates can be completed. I must suggest that only very experienced Pilates instructors be used for this as great knowledge of both Pilates and MS is a must.
