Accountability

I had yet another great session today with Michael, lots of core exercises on the fitball and with medicine balls, cycling, Top XT, floor work outs, and the lot.

I think another good reason for having a trainer is that for the first time since I started my weight loss regime, I feel accountable to someone, other than my long suffering companion, my diet and fitness journals. Being trained by Michael motivates me to work hard with my exercises the days I don’t work-out with him. It also motivates me to stick to my low carb/low GI diet.

So when things go horribly wrong, like going to a dinner party on Saturday night (where the hostess is also a fellow low carber), and finding a great and lovely menu which is sadly, an unplanned diversion from my low carb lifestyle, I remained gracious and thankful to my lovely hosts, let my hair down and had a great time without being a party pooper. Eating carbs for one day won’t kill me!

However, as expected, the consequences of just one night departure, immediately reflected rather badly on the scales with a 2.2 pounds weight gain on Sunday morning. I feel bad and disappointed, not only for/in myself and my goals, but also for letting Michael down.

But lessons learnt and all that. From now on, (like I do when I dine out in restaurants), I will be firm and get confirmation of menus when I dine at friends’ houses. “It’s a surprise.”  Or “No dieting tonight.” won’t cut the mustard anymore and I don’t think it is rude to ask for low carb options. Do you?

OK, I accept that it’s not the same thing, but the same way you won’t offer alcohol to an alcoholic, the same way I will gently explain the impact “normal” carbs have on my body and my weight. In the future, I will make sure that there are food options that mean that I’m not left with immediate and excessive weight gain that I spend a week trying to get off, instead of progressing to my next target weight.

Enough of all that though. The sun is shining, it’s a new week, and I’m getting on with doing my best.
